Covering 714 square kilometres and situated 80 kilometres south of Sydney is the city of Wollongong, New South Wales. Sitting on a slim coastal strip bounded by the Illawarra escarpment on the west, the Tasman Sea to the east, Lake Illawarra on the south, and the Royal National Park is to the north.

Originating from the Aboriginal word ‘woolyungah,’ the apparent meaning is ‘five islands.’ Having inhabited the region for at least 30,000 years, they were known as the Aboriginal people of the Illawarra.

In 1815, Charles Throsby first formed a settlement, taking his cattle from the Southern Highlands to a fresh water lagoon situated near South Beach.

A report written by John Oxley was the first reference to Wollongong in 1826. It mentioned the local cedar industry. 1833 saw the first school, and only one year later, the Surveyor-General came from Sydney to prepare the township of Wollongong on a parcel of land owned by Charles Throsby-Smith.

Charles Hoskins commenced the local steel industry in 1927, when he signed an agreement with the state government to erect a steel works at Port Kembla. To this day, there has been a long history of steel production in the region. BHP attained the company Australian Iron and Steel Limited, and with that, production improved swiftly.

In conjunction with the rapid rise in the steel industry, the foundations for the city of Wollongong’s lifestyle, economy and culture were a facilitator in development for many years. By this, the city is renowned as one of Australia’s leading industrial centres, proud of its manufacturing roots.

However, although steel and other manufacturing industries still play a vital role in the local economy, the need to diversify has been recognised. The mushrooming tourism industry, hospitality, health services, information technology and telecommunications are continuing to grow as significant businesses for the region.

Wollongong has 30 diverse language groups with 20 religious upbringings, all existing in harmony, thereby giving the city a rich sense of cultural and community heritage.

Wollongong is fortunate to have two Sister City relationships and one Friendship City. The two Sister Cities are Ohrid, Macedonia and Kawasaki, Japan. The Friendship City is Longyan, China.

Tourist parks are located about 60 to 90 minutes’ drive south of the Sydney airport, and only a short drive from the central business district of Wollongong. And something worth waiting for is the Grand Pacific Drive that covers some of the most remarkable shoreline in New South Wales.

For a gateway to the South Coast of N S W, you can’t go past Wollongong!
