And remember … the team at Lily’s Florist Wollongong is looking forward to serving you! Welcome to Wollongong, on the south coast of Sydney, NSW!

Wollongong has always been considered the gateway to the South Coast of N S W, and is renowned as one of Australia’s most liveable regional cities north of Sydney. Situated in the Illawarra area of New South Wales, Wollongong sits on a slender coastal strip between the Pacific Ocean and the Illawarra Escarpment. It is 82 kilometres south of Sydney.

As the third largest city in New South Wales, the population is registered as a little over 292,000, making it the ninth largest city in Australia.

The city area encompasses Shellharbour to the south and Helensburgh in the north, with the local authority regions comprising Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour, Helensburgh and Gerroa. The port movement and heavy industry are all part of the physical background of Wollongong, alongside the landscape of the rainforest-covered Illawarra escarpment, and the beaches.

Referring to the local Aboriginal word for Wollongong, it is believed to stand for “seas of the South,” denoting the southern coast of New South Wales. Situated on a narrow coastal plain, and bordered by the Tasman Sea on one side, and the steep sandstone cliffs of the escarpment on the other, the city of Wollongong has gained a diverse layout. A large lagoon called Lake Illawarra lies south of the city centre, but still within the metropolitan region.

The climate in Wollongong is referred to as oceanic, with typical temperatures in winter from 17 degrees, to 26 degrees in summer. A high in January was recorded as 44.1 degrees, and one of the lowest was in July as 0.8 degrees.

The original inhabitants in the region were the Dharwal Indigenous Australians. Matthew Flinders and George Bass were the first Europeans to set foot around the Lake Illawarra area in 1796. Pioneer cedar cutters in the early 19th century began to settle, followed by graziers. One particular grazier was Charles Throsby, who built a stockman’s hut in the region in 1815. Land grants were allocated soon after in 1816. Wollongong’s population had grown to 864 by the year 1856.

With the ready availability of coal, heavy industry was attracted to the area, and in 1928, Hoskins established a steelworks at Port Kembla. From the picture-book beauty of the parks and gardens, to the outstanding rock pools and beaches, Wollongong’s picturesque coastal villages, inspiring escarpments, and exceptional cuisine, all cluster to form a city that will not disappoint you. .
